Prevention Magazine offers these eye-opening tips for healthier looking skin…

If you want younger, better looking skin, think beyond the sunscreen (but use that too) and tinker with your diet. “Good nutrition is a fundamental building block of healthy skin,” says Leslie Baumann, MD, a dermatologist in Miami Beach. The natural ingredients in food help do everything from speed the pace of exfoliation to protect skin from the UV damage that causes brown spots and wrinkles. Here, 7 everyday foods that are guaranteed to make you glow.

7 Botox-free tips to look younger

1. Romaine Lettuce
Why You’ll Glow: Six leaves provide more than 100% of your DV of vitamin A, which revitalizes skin by increasing cell turnover. The mineral potassium in romaine “gives skin a refreshing boost of nutrients and oxygen by improving circulation,” says Lisa Drayer, RD, author of The Beauty Diet.

Health Bonus: That same serving of romaine contains 45% of the DV of vitamin K, which a recent study shows activates a protein that supports vascular health–making a future with bulging leg veins less likely.

What to eat for whiter teeth

2. Tomatoes
Why You’ll Glow: Eating red helps keep skin from turning red. Volunteers who consumed 5 tablespoons of high-in-lycopene tomato paste daily for 3 months had nearly 25% more protection against sunburn in one study. Even better, skin had more collagen, which prevents sagging. Another reason to toss an extra tomato into your salad: German scientists report that higher skin levels of this antioxidant correlate to fewer fine lines and furrows.

Health Bonus: Research suggests that lycopene may also lower your chances of heart disease: In one study, women with the highest levels of it had a 34% reduced risk.

Reduce redness and irritation in just 12 weeks

3. Strawberries
Why You’ll Glow: A cup has up to 130% of the DV of vitamin C, a potent antioxidant that boosts production of collagen fibers that help keep skin smooth and firm. More C may mean fewer fine lines too: Women with lower intakes were likelier to have dry, wrinkled skin. Early research also shows that ellagic acid, an antioxidant abundant in strawberries, protects the elastic fibers that keep skin from sagging.

Health Bonus: Strawberries may lower your risk of cancer by inhibiting the development of malignant cancer cells. In one study, people eating the most strawberries were 3 times less likely to develop the disease.

Food cures for cancer

4. Apples
Why You’ll Glow: Quercetin, an antioxidant in the peel of many varieties, provides hefty protection from the “burning” UVB rays that trigger skin cancer. A few offering the biggest dose: Monroe, Cortland, and Golden Delicious.

Health Bonus: Eating two or more apples a week for 1 year reduced the risk of dying from heart disease by 15% in one study of 34,000 healthy postmenopausal women. Whatever variety you choose, be sure to eat the peel, the source of nearly all the antioxidants.

28 days to a healthier heart

5. Eggs
Why You’ll Glow: Lutein and zeaxanthin, two antioxidants found in eggs, more than quadrupled protection against the UV damage that leads to lines, brown spots, and cancer in one study on women. Skin was also markedly softer, firmer, and better hydrated.

Health Bonus: Eating just one egg a day significantly increases blood levels of lutein and zeaxanthin (but not cholesterol), which may stave off macular degeneration by protecting the retina from light damage, finds a study in the Journal of Nutrition.

13 power breakfasts for energy

6. Almonds
Why You’ll Glow: “Eating a handful of almonds every day boosts levels of vitamin E, one of the most important antioxidants for skin health,” says Baumann. You’ll get a surge in moisture too–a boon for those prone to dryness.

Health Bonus: Though nuts are high in calories, women who ate them at least twice a week were less likely to gain weight than those who rarely did, in a new study of over 50,000 women.

Best night creams for your skin

7. Walnuts
Why You’ll Glow: These nuts are storehouses of alpha-linolenic acid, an omega-3 fat that’s a key component of the lubricating layer that keeps skin moist and supple. A 1/2-ounce serving of walnuts provides 100% of the recommended daily intake of ALA.

Health Bonus: Eating walnuts at dinner may deliver better shut-eye. Researchers at the University of Texas Health Science Center discovered that walnuts contain melatonin, a hormone that regulates sleep.

I just love this quote by Jane Wagner, as it describes how most of my clients feel when they first come to me for help. They know something isn’t working in their life, and they’re fairly certain that they’re not happy, but they haven’t figured out how to invite the state of happiness back into their life. Frankly, they’re still trying to figure out who that ‘somebody’ is in the big picture. When I ask them “What does that ‘somebody’ look like to you?”, I usually get a blank stare back until they get their “Aha!” moment and are able to answer me. I also refer to this as one of those “Wake up, Alice – this ain’t Wonderland” moments” in my coaching practice.

I remember when I first started coaching, I just wanted to help women be successful. Right! That was about as clear as mud. It’s no wonder it took me so long to get where I was going. And yes, I would whine because I didn’t get what I wanted. Imagine that. Thank goodness, I personally have had excellent coaches and mentors who taught me that if you want to get somewhere in your life, you’re going to have to get a lot more specific if you want to get there. You’re going to have to start asking different questions than the ones you’ve been asking.
Here’s an exercise for you to do that will help you get specific about what you want and invite the state of being happy back into heart and life!

1. OK, what does ‘happy’ look like to you?
This is my favorite question as it really makes you think about what you want. Are you looking for more ME time, more money, more fun, more business etc.? Make a short list of what your desires are to help you get more focused.

2. Is it in keeping with my Core Values?
If you are living in a state where you’re constantly going against your beliefs, then it’s no wonder you’re not happy! Your Core Values are what makes you unique – what set’s you apart from everyone else. If you deliberately do things that are in direct disharmony from your values, you will never achieve true happiness.

3. What actions would I have to take to get there?
Well, depending on where ‘there’ is, the actions will be different. One thing I do know for certain is that without ANY action on your behalf, you will NEVER get anywhere! Change always involves action – you need to physically and mentally make an effort to change your behaviors in order to invite new habits into your life.

4. What kind of support would I need and from whom?
The biggest support you need in order to change is that which you get from yourself! If you are not your own biggest fan, then learn to build up your levels of self-confidence and self-esteem first. Do only those things that make you feel good inside and encourage you to aspire to do even more. Take that course to learn to speak Italian! Go enroll in piano or guitar lessons! Sign up for that Yoga class! It always helps if you can get support from your friends and family, but if that isn’t happening, consider getting a personal coach to get you to that next level.

5. How would I feel when I got there? Wherever ‘there’ is!
If you imagine NOW how you’ll feel when you get wherever ‘there’ is, you’re more likely to succeed. This is based on the Law of Attraction and it is a very obedient law. It always matches whatever vibrations you send, both negative and positive, so try envisioning being happy and content in wherever ‘there’ may be for you long before your arrive at that place.

6. How committed am I to getting there?
Are you only doing a little bit or are you willing to do whatever it takes to get you to that happy place? If you approach making the necessary changes in your life in a lackadaisical way, not caring if you really succeed, you might as well not waste your time and effort. You need to put 100% of your time, thought and energy into getting to where you want to go. 50% effort will only get you 50% positive results, and who wants to settle for only half a cookie when you can have the whole thing? You have to be willing to do the work – period. As the old saying goes, ‘Put your money where your mouth is!”

Are you starting to get the picture? The road is not as hard or as long when you know where you are going and you get really specific about your journey.

Try working these six steps for a month and see what happens. I’m sure you’re going to be very surprised at how you’ll feel. Everyone deserves to be happy so take time today to start inviting joy back into your life.

Room
By Emma Donoghue
336 pages; Little, Brown

Imagine that you are 5 years old and growing up in an 11-by-11 backyard shack. You have never been outside, you sleep in a makeshift closet, and the only other human being you’ve ever met is your mother. That’s the lot of little Jack, the narrator-hero of Emma Donoghue’s Room, a novel so disturbing that we defy you to stop thinking about it, days later. While Jack only vaguely understands how he and Ma got here, his commentary reveals that he was born in this tiny room to Ma and her kidnapper, who still comes by to rape her at night. Nevertheless, in some twisted way, mother and son have a model relationship: They are fiercely attached, have “normal” conversations and arguments, and rituals for meals, bathtime, and games. In fact, it is only after they successfully engineer a thrilling escape that Jack’s life becomes unsettled; like all children, he begins to long for what he had, what he thought was a regular life. This blend of allegory and true crime (Donoghue has said she was influenced by several recent news stories) is beautifully served by Jack’s wise but innocent voice: When he bangs his head on a faucet, he hears, “Careful”—and wonders, “Why do persons only say that after the hurt?” And while a first-person, child-narrated tale can sometimes feel like a gimmick, the enviable trick here is that Donoghue makes you want to stay with Ma and Jack, whether they’re in their own private prison or out in the so-called free world

The Bluest Eye is Toni Morrison’s first novel, a book heralded for its richness of language and boldness of vision. Set in the author’s girlhood hometown of Lorain Ohio, it tells the story of black, eleven-year-old Pecola Breedlove. Pecola prays for her eyes to turn blue so that she will be as beautiful as beloved as all the blond, blue-eyed children in America. In the autumn of 1941, the year the marigold in the Breedloves’ garden do not bloom. Pecola’s life does change—in painful, devastating ways. With its vivid evocation of the feat and loneliness at the heart of a child’s yearning, and the tragedy of it’s fulfillment, The Bluest Eye remains on of Toni Morrison’s most powerful, unforgettable novels—and a significant work of American fiction.

By Julia Glass
416 pages; Pantheon

Some books grab you from the first page. Julia Glass’s novel, The Widower’s Tale, lightly touches you on the shoulder and requests your kind attention to an enchanting story of familial bonds and late-life romance. Expect to be infatuated with Glass’s protagonist, 70-year-old Percy Darling, he of the generous soul, dry wit, and courtly manners. Living alone in a rural enclave near Boston, he clings to the emotional reticence he cultivated after losing his wife—until he falls for the much younger Sarah. Making love to her for the first time, he’s a poignant combination of passion and vulnerability. “She did not, thank heaven, tell me that I was handsome or virile or sexy. She just closed her eyes again and wrapped herself more tightly around me.” Meanwhile, a rich mix of other characters play out their own dramas in a leisurely fashion. But who cares how long the journey takes when you’re in such good company?

Between 1915 and 1970, as lynching became public spectacle, as a nicely dressed black woman might be arrested for “acting white,” as black sections of towns were burned down or terrorized, black sharecroppers and surgeons quietly fled the South for New York City, Detroit, Oakland—as far as they could possibly go. It was, as Pulitzer Prize–winning journalist Isabel Wilkerson masterfully demonstrates in The Warmth of Other Suns, this leaderless “silent pilgrimage” that brought us James Baldwin, Miles Davis, and the forebears of Michelle Obama; it precipitated the civil rights movement and created our cities and art forms. Wilkerson builds her lucid analysis on the journey her parents took and on the biographies of three who made the trip: George Swanson Starling, Robert Joseph Pershing Foster, and Ida Mae Brandon Gladney, who fled Mississippi for Chicago after a relative was beaten close to death for supposedly stealing a white man’s turkeys. Each narrative becomes a rich novella thanks to Wilkerson’s instinct for pacing and for her subjects’ idiosyncrasies. Scholarly but very readable, this book, for all its rigor, is so absorbing, it should come with a caveat: Pick it up only when you can lose yourself entirely.

Last week the Congress passed the long debated 2,300 page Financial Reform bill, created in response to the abuses leading up to the recent financial crisis. “Sweeping” is an understatement for this bill, as it not only creates new agencies with broad powers, it includes some 243 rules that have yet to be fleshed out.

The biggest thing to come out of the bill is the creation of the Bureau of Consumer Financial Protection, which will have a $550 million budget (the FDA budget is $784 million by reference) to oversee any number of financial products such as mortgages and credit cards. Notably, the auto industry lobbied out of regulation by the agency, and pawn brokers are also exempt (I know, I don’t make sense of it, I just report it). The agency will have broad responsibilities that have not quite been defined yet. It will be headed by a single person rather than a board. Elizabeth Warren, a consumer advocate currently serving as chair of the Congressional Oversight Panel, is a top candidate for the position, although others are being considered as well. In my opinion, Elizabeth Warren is a champion of middle class consumer protection and would do a great job. She may even replace Ralph Nader as my favorite celebrity.

The bill does contain some specific protections and changes for consumers: now if you are rejected for a loan, or offered an interest rate that is too high, you may see the credit score the lender used (in the past you were entitled to a free copy of your credit report, but had to pay for your credit score). Prepayment penalties will be a thing of the past for adjustable rate and complex mortgages. No income verification loans will also be history; lenders will be required to verify income. Mortgage originators will not be allowed to earn bonuses based on the type of loan you choose, eliminating financial incentive to put you into a riskier loan. While these reforms are good, and make credit safer, they may also have the effect of making credit harder to get, as it will be less profitable for lenders. On the retail end, merchants will be allowed to give a discount for cash or debit cards, but not for choosing one type of credit over another, such as a discount to use Visa vs. American Express. However, merchants can impose a $10 minimum or less for debit card purchases. If you are a shareholder in a corporation, you will now be given the opportunity to vote on executive compensation. But companies don’t actually have to listen (refer to comment about pawn brokers above).

One provision I’m very pleased about: the bill creates an Office of Financial Literacy, which aims to educate people to protect them from becoming victims of financial abuse. And a provision I’m not so sure about: the Office of Financial Research, which, in the name of monitoring Wall Street, will be a central repository of financial transaction records the agency deems necessary to look for systemic risk. It is not clear exactly what records will be kept and who will have access to them. Could your ATM receipts end up there? We’ll have to see.

The Office of Financial Research is part of the Financial Stability Oversight Council, which could require financial institutions to keep higher capital requirements if the council sees a problem. The council will monitor companies that become “too big to fail,” and impose stricter regulation upon them. Should it appear that a company’s health is seriously suffering, the government will have the ability to liquidate the company and pass the cost along to the industry.

Now, about that “F word;” I’m talking about Fiduciary. For months, the Financial Planning Coalition has been working behind the scenes to include a fiduciary requirement for financial advisors in this bill. It has faced opposition from brokers and the insurance industry, and ultimately was included only as a call for the SEC to study the issue for six months, make recommendations, and impose a fiduciary responsibility on financial professionals if it chooses.

What is a fiduciary, and what is the big deal? According to The Committee for the Fiduciary Standard, fiduciaries:

• Put the client’s best interests first

• Act with prudence; that is, with the skill, care, diligence and good judgment of a professional

• Do not mislead clients; provide conspicuous, full and fair disclosure of all important facts

• Avoid conflicts of interest

• Fully disclose and fairly manage, in the client’s favor, any unavoidable conflicts

Currently, Certified Financial Planners™ and Registered Investment Advisors are held to a fiduciary standard, while brokers and registered representatives are held to a suitability standard (must act in a way that is suitable for client vs. best for client). This is not to say that no brokers or registered representatives act in the best interest of their clients, but only that they are not required to. The debate centers around whether or not all who hold themselves out to be financial advisors, whether representatives, insurance agents, or planners, should be held to a fiduciary standard, or if instead there should be some demarcation between the two. In my opinion, it would be difficult to change the way the industry does business by requiring all to adhere to a fiduciary standard; if a no-load (no sales charge) mutual fund is best for a client, but the company gets paid by selling mutual funds with sales charges, as a fiduciary would that representative then send his or her client to Vanguard? That doesn’t make sense to me. What would make sense would be full disclosure that the advisor is in a sales position with the company, making a sale rather than giving ongoing advice, and held to a suitability standard, so that the consumer would have clear expectations about the transaction. However, if a financial professional acts in the capacity of giving advice, rather than information about a product, I do believe a fiduciary standard of care should be required. It will be interesting to see what the SEC recommends.

Erin Baehr is a Certified Financial Planner™, and the owner of Baehr Family Financial (www.baehrfinancial.com), a fee-only financial planning firm in Stroudsburg. She can be reached at 223-1550.

Sipping and tipping was the evening’s main activity at Stroudsburg’s Liquid Martini Bar last Thursday. As KNBT Stroudsburg branch manager Holley Kearns spoke about credit card debt, the women who braved the sultry heat outdoors sipped on concoctions such as apple-tinis, chocolate-tinis and wine for wimps like me. Our first Money & Martinis event was unanimously proclaimed a smash hit! Pun Intended.

Holley spoke briefly about checking our credit scores at www.annual credit report.com and informed us that our score should be at least 600 for us not to be concerned . She also reminded us to get rid of those credit cards that we haven’t used in a while -unless it is a major credit card that you have had in your possession for many years. In that case, it would be a good idea to charge a little something on that good old card and establish or raise your credit rating — once you pay the bill, that is. Her suggestions were also well taken on how to create good debt, over bad debt. Good debt actually helps to build our credit rating – like buying a home, for instance. or borrowing money for a college education. Bad debt is all that junk we buy at the mall. Again, being able to pay for it all is key.

As Holley kept tipping us about affairs of the purse, we continued to sip and sigh and think about how to put her words into action in our own lives. That is, after we taste the french bread dip..

Photos of this event can be found on our Flickr button in the right hand margin of the home page. Enjoy! We did!

Money & Martinis will be held again in September. Watch your newsletter for the date and time! This is a Members Only event, so join us for some financial fun.

I am often complimented on my unusual icebreakers and introductions. I think the point of networking is to get people past the initial discomfort and to really interact. Here are some interesting icebreakers to start off your next meeting or teambuilding session. THEN, please respond to ONE of the options with YOUR answers (tell us which one you’re doing, too!!)

Thanks!

1. Story of My Life

You have just been given a contract to write your autobiography for a major publishing company. Your agent Harry Hardnose is anxious to get to press. He has decided to help you get started with a few probing questions.

First, take a piece of flipchart paper and fold it in half and then in half again to form a book.

Choose the title of a popular song for the name of your book. Write that title on the front cover.

On the inside of the front cover (page two), list a table of contents.

Name of the place where you were born

Description of your first job

Number of years you have been working for your company

On page three, draw a picture of your family.

On the back cover of the book, draw a picture of what you plan to do when you retire. Where will you go? Who will you go with? Etc.

Materials Needed

Paper
Markers

Time

Allow five to ten minutes for setup, and drawing. When all books are complete, have people tell their story, using the book as a visual aid. Depending on the size of the group, you may want to debrief in smaller groups. If possible, leave the books in a central location during your training to encourage further introductions and discussions.

Variations

Change the focus of the pages of the book. For instance, most exciting moment, favorite food, most exciting vacation, etc. Be careful not to make any of the questions too personal. The idea is to open people up, not shut them down.

2. What’s Cooking?

Your family (group) just inherited a successful restaurant from Chef Charlie, a long lost relative. The only problem: Charlie was very disorganized. The only recipes you have found are on torn strips of paper. You have to make sense of it all and quickly! The restaurant is opening tonight, and you have to have the food ready.

Each member of the group will be given part of recipe (an ingredient, instruction, etc.).

Your job is to put yourselves in order as quickly as possible. Your recipe must make sense.

When your group is done, loudly announce “bon appetite” to signal the end of the game.

Materials Needed

Several Small Prizes for the Winning Team

Cut Recipes (Separate the Title, Ingredients, Instructions, Etc.)

Time

Allow ten to 12 minutes for the game. Once a team calls “bon appetite,” have them introduce themselves and read their recipe in order.

Variations

For an added challenge, this game can be made considerably more difficult if groups are not pre-designated before the recipe pieces are distributed. Participants must then not only find the correct order but the correct recipe as well.

3. ABCs of Me

You have been hired by the Creative Classroom Company to illustrate a poster to help children learn their ABCs. By happy coincidence, you and your first name are the subject of the poster!

First, take a piece of flipchart paper and write your name vertically down the left side.

Next, choose a word that starts with each letter of your name. The word should describe something about you. Write those words horizontally across the paper, using the letters of your name as the first letter of each descriptive word.

After you have listed your words, draw an accompanying picture to illustrate each.

When you are finished, tape your poster to the wall.

Materials Needed

Paper
Markers
Tape

Time

Allow five to ten minutes for setup and drawing. When all posters are complete, have people introduce themselves using their name drawing. Depending on the size of the group, you may want to debrief in smaller groups. If possible, leave the drawings posted throughout your training session.

Variations

Narrow the focus of the words. For instance, all words must be adjectives, nouns, or verbs related to work, related to foods you like, etc.

4. I Remember

You and the others in your group are about to revisit the past and take a trip down “Memory Lane.”

First, get a coin.

Next, look at the year on the coin. Take a minute to think about what you were doing when that coin was minted. Were you in school? Were you a child? Where did you work? Were you married? Where did you live? What was going on in your life at that time? What was the music of the day? Etc. (If you were not yet born or prefer not to discuss your life during the year selected, choose another coin.)

After you have had some time to remember where you were, you are ready to play the game. Your goal is to find someone with a coin that was minted at least two years before or after yours. Ultimately, your goal is to have the oldest coin in the room.

Once you have found a partner, take three minutes to tell each other about your moments in time. When you are finished, each of you flip your coin. Reveal the results of your toss to your partner. If they are alike (both heads or tails) exchange coins. If they differ, keep your original coin.

Repeat the process up to three times as designated by the facilitator.

Materials Needed

Coins
Prize

Time

Allow five minutes for setup. Allow five minutes for each round. At the end of all rounds, call each year in order and ask each participant to stand and give his or her name. Award a prize to the holder of the oldest coin.

Variations

Use your own coins to ensure an even distribution of years.

If using your own coins, incorporate a piece of corporate history with each. Research a fact or figure about each year of your business and include it with the corresponding coins. When the participants exchange their own information, they can also share a piece of the corporate history. When debriefing, call each year in order and ask the participant with the year called to read his or her fact.

5. Six Degrees of Separation

It happens all of the time: we meet someone who knows someone we know. It’s a small world, that’s for sure. The object of this game is to see how small the world really is.

First, find a partner. Introduce yourselves and make a list of five to ten things that you have in common with each other: where you went to school, year you were born, number of years with the company, food likes, sports likes, etc.

Once you have completed your first list, you must find someone else in the room that also has one of those five to ten things in common with you. When you have found that person, repeat step one and develop a new list.

Repeat step two.

Continue until you have met five other people or time is called by the facilitator.

A prize will be given to the first person able to complete the game. When you are done, let the facilitator know that you have finished.

Materials Needed

Prize

Time

Allow approximately 15 – 20 minutes for game. Once most people have finished, call time. Ask your winner to reveal his/her chain of separation by introducing those interviewed.

6. Scavenger Hunt

You are about to begin a scavenger hunt with several members of this training group. The object of the game is to collect all of the items listed below as quickly as possible. You may talk with anyone in the group. You may not leave the room. You must associate each item with the person who gave it to you. You may not get more than two items from any one person. Once the facilitator has assigned groups, you may begin play. When your team is finished, your team should loudly announce the phrase “hunt over” to the rest of the group. Be prepared to say where you got each item. A prize will be awarded to the team that finishes first.

A Driver’s License

A Family Photo

A Store Receipt

A 1979 or Earlier Penny

A Piece of Candy

A Ballpoint Pen

A Lipstick

A Planner, Palm Pilot, Calendar, or Other Organizer

A Drink

A Coffee Cup

A Marker

A Piece of Candy

A Store Credit Card

A Pair of Glasses

A Magazine or Book

The list of hunt items should be reviewed by the facilitator before the game begins in order to make sure that all items are available.

Materials Needed

Several Small Prizes for the Winning Team

Time

Allow 10 – 12 minutes for the game. Once a team calls “hunt over,” have them review each of the items, where they got them, and from whom.

Variations

Instead of using actual items, list activities and facts as the items to find. For instance, “plays piano.” The object of the game is to find someone who plays the piano and associate the person’s name with that item.

7. Tattoo

You have just arrived at Tony’s Tattoo Parlor for a tattoo. Tony is competing for “Tattoo King of the Year,” a contest sponsored by Needle Knows magazine. Every design is a potential entry, and Tony wants each of his tattoos to say something about the person wearing them. From you, he needs a little inspiration and a design before he can start his work. Tony is excellent at lettering, animals, characters, band logos, maps, etc.

On your piece of paper, you are to design a rough tattoo that reveals something about yourself, your work, your hobbies, or your family, in order to help get Tony’s creative juices flowing.

You must also make a note about how big the tattoo should be and where you will have it applied.

Materials Needed

Paper
Tape
Markers

Time

Allow five to ten minutes for setup, drawing, and posting designs on the wall. Depending on the size of the group, you may want to debrief in smaller groups. If possible, leave the designs posted throughout your training to encourage further introductions and discussions.

Variations

Narrow the scope of the tattoo design: what you do at work, an animal most like you, favorite song, favorite band, adjective that best describes you, etc.

Divide your group in two. For round one, assign one group the role of Tony and the other group the role of the customer. Each customer must find a Tony and tell him about the design they would like and why. Tony is to draw a design, asking questions as he or she goes. After the first set of designs is complete, the groups reverse roles. To encourage additional interaction, ask the customers to “shop around” and find another partner to work with. To debrief, let each Tony describe what he or she drew and for whom.

8. Storyteller

You are about to stretch your storytelling skills with the help of others in the group designated by the facilitator. You will incorporate facts about yourself into a story that could just go anywhere.

First, write down the name of …

something you would see in a store.

something you would buy as a gift for your mother.

your favorite sport

your favorite celebrity.

a crime.

your favorite restaurant.

a tourist attraction.

a profession.

the name of someone in the room.

The facilitator will begin the story with, “Once upon a time, I found the most unusual thing.” The next person is to fill in the next piece of the story. The object of the game is to incorporate as many of the items as you can from those listed above. No one can say more the two sentences at a time. Turns must be taken in order. To win, you must incorporate all of your words and then conclude the story. Everyone must get an opportunity to “write” from their imagination at least twice before the story can end.

Materials Needed

Prize

Time

Allow ten to 20 minutes for the game. If the group is large, consider breaking into smaller subgroups or reducing the number of incorporated words required to win. For instance, you must work in five words from those listed in part one.

Variations

You can easily tailor this game by changing the questions in part one to better match your industry, company, etc.

9. Trait Trader

You have just taken a job as a trait trader in the fictitious exchange, the Personality Market. You are a new executive, and it is very important to you that you do well in your new job. To do so, you must trade wisely and end the game with a trait that applies to you.

In a moment, you will be given a piece of paper (trade slip) with a personality or character trait written on it (e.g. tall, creative, adventurous, quiet, etc.) Write your name on the slip.

You must trade your slip with someone else. If your new trait also applies to you, write your name on that slip. If not, move to step three.

Trade again. Your goal is to end up with a trait that applies to you and to have written your name on more slips than anyone else.

When the facilitator calls out “exchange closed,” the game is over.

You may stop trading before the exchange closes. Remember, your goal is to end up with a trait that applies to you and to have written your name on more slips than anyone else.

Materials Needed

Prize

Trait Slips (Consider: Over 5’8”, Born in the 70s, Red Hair, Curly Hair, Athlete, Creative, Talkative, Adventurous, Quiet, Bossy, Demanding, Funny, Dare Devil, etc.) You design the slips based on your group. Remember to be sensitive to age, gender, etc.

Time

Allow 12 – 15 minutes for the game and then call “exchange closed.” Next, ask everyone to turn their trait slip to the side that holds the names of the traders. Ask your first trader to say his or her name and to read his or her trait, stating whether or not it is true about them. Then, ask the others in the group to raise their hands if the trader’s name appears on their trade slips. Count the hands. Move to the next trader and repeat. When done, award the prize to the trader with the most slips signed who has a trait that describes him or her on the final slip.

10. Race for the Truth

You and the other “runners” in the room are about to embark on a race for the truth. Your goal is to cross the finish line as quickly as possible by truthfully answering questions about yourself as you follow the facilitator’s directions.

Line up on the starting line as directed by the facilitator.

In a moment you will hear a statement. If it is true about you, move forward one step. If it is false, remain at the finish line.

Once all first moves have been made, the facilitator will make another statement. Again, if it is true, move forward one step. If it is false, remain on the starting line if you have not yet advanced. If you have advanced past the starting line, take one step back.

Repeat step three until the first “runner” completes the race.

Materials Needed

2 Long Pieces of String for the Start and Finish Lines

List of Statements Related to The Group (e.g. “I have worked here more that one year.” “I think we have too many meetings around here.” or “I understand xyz aspect of my job.”

Time

Allow five to ten minutes for this activity.

Variations

Narrow the scope of the statements to relate to issues at work, materials being covered, etc.

11. Candy Confessions

You have just taken a job as a candy tester in the Candy Confessions factory. What makes this candy different from other candy is that each flavor is associated with a fact about you. Your job is to select and “test” four different candies from a bowl/box that will circulate among all testers.

Choose four candies from the bowl without looking. In a moment, a key code will be revealed, indicating which truths you should tell.

Once the code has been revealed you may begin your confession.

Materials Needed

Basket of Candy

Key Code (e.g. Kit Kats = Favorite Movie, Favorite Magazine, Favorite Song, or Favorite Book, Krackle = Favorite Vacation Spot, Place You Would Like To Visit, Place You Would Least Like To Visit, or Worst Vacation, Lollipop =Number of Years in Current Position, Where You Work, What You Do, or Brief Description of First Job, Gum Drops = Something About Where You Live, Something About Where You Grew Up, Something About Your Family, Something About Your Town/City, Kisses = Wildcard [tell us anything])

Time

Allow ten to 20 minutes for the entire process.

Variations

Allow people to take as many candies as they like from the basket and reveal something random about themselves for each candy they take.

Use a ball of string. Allow each person to take as much as they like. For each inch, they must reveal something about themselves. (Additional material: string, scissors, and ruler)

12. True or False

You have just entered a new society of truth-tellers and liars. You and the others sometimes tell the truth and sometimes lie. The key to this society is knowing when you are being lied to and when you are being told the truth.

Partners must guess if a statement is the truth or a lie. If both players are correct, move on. If both are incorrect, move on. If one is correct and one is wrong, the wrong person is out.

First, flip a coin. If it reveals “heads,” you tell truth; if “tails,” you lie.

Find a partner, swap stories. Your partner must then guess if you told the truth or a lie. If both are correct, move on. If both are incorrect, move on. If one is correct and one wrong, the person who guessed incorrectly is out.

Move on and repeat steps one and two until one person remains and is declared the winner.

Materials Needed

Prize

Extra Coins

Time

Allow ten to 20 minutes to play the game, depending on the size of the group. Award a prize to the person who remains standing.

13. The Magic Lamp

You and your team have just found a lamp. You rub it, and surprise! A genie appears. The genie grants you three wishes. You are allowed to make three changes at work. You may change yourself, your boss, your job, the people around you, etc.

The facilitator will soon divide you into groups of three to five people and give your team a piece of flipchart paper and a marker.

Once you have your materials, design your wish list for your genie. When you are finished, post it on the wall.

Materials Needed

Flipchart Paper

Markers

Time

Allow five to ten minutes for setup, writing, and posting lists on the wall. Allow five minutes for debriefing. If possible, leave the lists posted throughout your training to encourage further introductions and discussions.

14. Totem Truths

In the past, a totem pole was carved for several reasons; for example, to honor a deceased elder who was important to the carver, to show the number of rights and names a person had acquired over his or her lifetime, or to document an encounter with the supernatural. Today, totems are carved not only for those reasons but also to tell the story about the person commissioning the pole. You and your team are about to design a totem pole to discover your group’s strengths and weaknesses.

In a moment, the facilitator will divide you into teams. Each of you will be handed a piece of cardboard and a list of totems. You are to design a totem figure that best represents your strengths in the group. You may use one of the totem symbols given or make up your own.

Once you have completed your drawing, you and your team will tape them one on top of the other on a portion of the wall. Be prepared to explain your strength to the group.

Materials Needed

8.5” x 11” Cardboard Piece for Each Participant

Markers

List of Animal Totems (pages following)

Time

Allow 20 minutes for the entire process.

This exercise is excellent for teambuilding.

Variations

Ask each group to design a group crest, similar to a family crest. The only disadvantage to this versus the totem is that the groups are static. With the totems, you can reorganize the groups and have them rebuild the poles throughout the day’s activities.

15. Definitions

You have just taken a job at a dictionary company. You are responsible for editing a new edition. The only problem is that some of the computers went on the fritz and wiped out various definitions. You have decided to “wing it” and make up definitions for the words of which you don’t know the meaning.

In a moment, you will be handed a card. It will contain either a word or a word and a definition.

If you received a “word only” card, you must make up a definition.

If you received a definition card, you must explain the definition without reading the card.

The object of the game is for the others in the group to spot the real definition of the word.

You may not vote on your own word.

Materials Needed

Small Prizes

Index Cards with Words

Index Cards with Definitions of Lesser-Known Words (See Example)

Brobdingnagian \brahb-ding-NAG-ee-uhn\, adjective:
Colossal; of extraordinary height; gigantic. — as a noun: a giant. [Often misspelt Brobdignagian.]

“The final triumph of my Brobdingnagian persecutor.” –William Godwin, The Enquirer

“A brand-new brobdingnagian hotel.” –Benjamin Disraeli, Lothair

“Known to our Brobdingnagian intelligence as grains of sand.” —Grant Allen

Time

Allow 5 minutes for preparation. Allow 10 minutes to play the game. Award small prizes to the people who guess the most correct answers.

A new online magazine called Pocono Good created by East Stroudsburg University students focuses on compelling human interest stories about the unsung people who run Monroe County non-profit organizations (NPOs) and the good things associated with the missions of the NPOs themselves. The new publication will debut during a launch party at ESU on Wednesday, July 7 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in Lower Dansbury Lounge. The event is open to the public at no cost.

This pilot issue of the magazine features articles on 15 regional non-profit organizations and the writing, photography and design of 25 ESU students. Pocono Good informs the community of opportunities to participate in volunteer activities, of events open to the public to support charities and nonprofit fundraising, and provides a single referral to resources for people in need.

Through the process of developing this publication, students received their first professional byline and/or publication credit while gaining a better understanding of the problems facing the greater community.

The project to create the magazine was made possible through funding provided by a grant from the office of the provost in response to a proposal by two faculty members, Dr. Susan Bonser in media communication and technology, and, Professor Bill Broun in the English department. Their proposal was a suggested plan for the new publication, Pocono Good. It exemplified how the application of an actual student/faculty community service learning project could be designed and implemented in a manner that benefits the community while involving the students in a real world project with the potential to take root.

Bonser taught computer design and Broun taught writing for the web to their magazine-creating students throughout the past spring semester. While learning these skills and developingPocono Good, students also gained significant perspectives on social problems, volunteer organizations and the concepts and history surrounding non-profit organizations.

The NPOs featured in the magazine are: Bushkill Outreach, The Pocono Community Theater, Habitat for Humanity, P.A.T.H., The Angel’s Closet, Mohican Outdoor Center, Poetry Workshop of the Pocono Writers, Animals Can’t Talk Rescue and Adoption Inc., Animal Welfare Society of Monroe (AWSOM), Women’s Resources of Monroe County, Meals on Wheels of Monroe County, Monroe County Planning Commission, Pocono Mountains Film Festival, Angel Food Ministries, and the Eastburg Community Alliance.

“We are pleased Pocono Good met the goals of our initial proposal, offering unique stories of help and hope to our readers while providing students with opportunities to learn about multimedia magazine reporting, writing, and design,” said Dr. Bonser. “In addition to receiving a stipend for their work, each of these students experienced valuable lessons that will surely enhance their resumes as they seek employment during these tough economic times.”

Representatives from each of the 15 non-profit organizations, who were written about in the inaugural issue of Pocono Good, will attend the launch party and will receive a donation toward their organizations.

Bonser, Broun and the students who created Pocono Good are encouraged by the initial response to the magazine and they are seeking ongoing funding support to ensure the publication’s continuation. They also encourage readers to let them know what they think of the new magazine, and to submit ideas for articles about other non-profit organizations for future consideration at poconogood.com.

For more information about Pocono Good, contact Dr. Bonser at sbonser@po-box.esu.edu or Professor Broun at wbroun@po-box.esu.edu.
