Prevention Magazine offers these eye-opening tips for healthier looking skin…

If you want younger, better looking skin, think beyond the sunscreen (but use that too) and tinker with your diet. “Good nutrition is a fundamental building block of healthy skin,” says Leslie Baumann, MD, a dermatologist in Miami Beach. The natural ingredients in food help do everything from speed the pace of exfoliation to protect skin from the UV damage that causes brown spots and wrinkles. Here, 7 everyday foods that are guaranteed to make you glow.

7 Botox-free tips to look younger

1. Romaine Lettuce
Why You’ll Glow: Six leaves provide more than 100% of your DV of vitamin A, which revitalizes skin by increasing cell turnover. The mineral potassium in romaine “gives skin a refreshing boost of nutrients and oxygen by improving circulation,” says Lisa Drayer, RD, author of The Beauty Diet.

Health Bonus: That same serving of romaine contains 45% of the DV of vitamin K, which a recent study shows activates a protein that supports vascular health–making a future with bulging leg veins less likely.

What to eat for whiter teeth

2. Tomatoes
Why You’ll Glow: Eating red helps keep skin from turning red. Volunteers who consumed 5 tablespoons of high-in-lycopene tomato paste daily for 3 months had nearly 25% more protection against sunburn in one study. Even better, skin had more collagen, which prevents sagging. Another reason to toss an extra tomato into your salad: German scientists report that higher skin levels of this antioxidant correlate to fewer fine lines and furrows.

Health Bonus: Research suggests that lycopene may also lower your chances of heart disease: In one study, women with the highest levels of it had a 34% reduced risk.

Reduce redness and irritation in just 12 weeks

3. Strawberries
Why You’ll Glow: A cup has up to 130% of the DV of vitamin C, a potent antioxidant that boosts production of collagen fibers that help keep skin smooth and firm. More C may mean fewer fine lines too: Women with lower intakes were likelier to have dry, wrinkled skin. Early research also shows that ellagic acid, an antioxidant abundant in strawberries, protects the elastic fibers that keep skin from sagging.

Health Bonus: Strawberries may lower your risk of cancer by inhibiting the development of malignant cancer cells. In one study, people eating the most strawberries were 3 times less likely to develop the disease.

Food cures for cancer

4. Apples
Why You’ll Glow: Quercetin, an antioxidant in the peel of many varieties, provides hefty protection from the “burning” UVB rays that trigger skin cancer. A few offering the biggest dose: Monroe, Cortland, and Golden Delicious.

Health Bonus: Eating two or more apples a week for 1 year reduced the risk of dying from heart disease by 15% in one study of 34,000 healthy postmenopausal women. Whatever variety you choose, be sure to eat the peel, the source of nearly all the antioxidants.

28 days to a healthier heart

5. Eggs
Why You’ll Glow: Lutein and zeaxanthin, two antioxidants found in eggs, more than quadrupled protection against the UV damage that leads to lines, brown spots, and cancer in one study on women. Skin was also markedly softer, firmer, and better hydrated.

Health Bonus: Eating just one egg a day significantly increases blood levels of lutein and zeaxanthin (but not cholesterol), which may stave off macular degeneration by protecting the retina from light damage, finds a study in the Journal of Nutrition.

13 power breakfasts for energy

6. Almonds
Why You’ll Glow: “Eating a handful of almonds every day boosts levels of vitamin E, one of the most important antioxidants for skin health,” says Baumann. You’ll get a surge in moisture too–a boon for those prone to dryness.

Health Bonus: Though nuts are high in calories, women who ate them at least twice a week were less likely to gain weight than those who rarely did, in a new study of over 50,000 women.

Best night creams for your skin

7. Walnuts
Why You’ll Glow: These nuts are storehouses of alpha-linolenic acid, an omega-3 fat that’s a key component of the lubricating layer that keeps skin moist and supple. A 1/2-ounce serving of walnuts provides 100% of the recommended daily intake of ALA.

Health Bonus: Eating walnuts at dinner may deliver better shut-eye. Researchers at the University of Texas Health Science Center discovered that walnuts contain melatonin, a hormone that regulates sleep.

Weight gain as we hit middle-age becomes a larger and larger issue. But you can fight off the menopausal binge. Read more here.

To maintain a healthy weight, middle-aged women essentially have to work their tails off, exercising 60 minutes a day. Seven days a week. For women who already are overweight, “it may be too late,” the study ominously states.

Who has that kind of time and discipline? Many of the Orange County women I spoke with acknowledged, shaking their heads, that putting on pounds probably is inevitable for women (and a lot of men) as they age. But that didn’t stop them from working as hard as they could to keep inevitability at bay.

To achieve this end a lot of men and women elect to undergo cosmetic plastic surgery procedures.
Many plastic surgery procedures are widely used to enhance appearance originally began as solutions to reconstructive problems. The relationship between the two types of procedures is so close that surgeons well-versed in plastic surgery procedures also have the background and training required for reconstructive surgery.

You may have married at a later age or focused on your career before having a family. In most cases, however, the decision – or surprise – of pregnancy after forty is the result of having a rather large family that continues to grow.

Whatever the reason, you should know that pregnancy after forty is no big deal. With today’s advances in medicine, increased health care and the increasingly common nature of the phenomenon, pregnancy after forty is actually becoming routine. However, while there’s nothing to be afraid of, there are many things you should be aware of before going through with a pregnancy at this point in your life.

The relationship between doctors and patients is changing. Several things are happening at once. Patients now have access, via the Internet, to more and better information about health and healthy living than ever before. Doctors’ schedules are busier than ever, too, which means that the days of leisurely chats in the doctor’s office are disappearing fast. So becoming an educated patient is now easier, but more important, than ever before. By making the most of your time with your doctor, focusing upon trustworthy, credible sources of healthcare information, and scheduling regular check-ups with your physician, you can start to take advantage of this new day in healthcare for doctors and patients.

All you have to do is change everything about yourself. As crazy as it seems, it’s the truth. A change in your attitude will eventually involve everything about you. It’s easy and yet, the fact that you have to keep at it day after day after day is what makes it really hard. An attitude change requires a long term perseverance that few people have. That’s what makes it the biggest change you will ever make

Attitude changes typically take place when something monumental happens in a person’s life that suddenly makes them see everything differently. This may be a near-death experience or some kind of tragedy that they weren’t expecting. People begin to see that life is extremely fragile and they begin to think that maybe the real meaning of life is contained in something other than the things they used to value so much. They begin to change their values to and to approach life from a new perspective about what is truly important. It doesn’t have to be a tragedy or a near-death experience, however, which brings this about. An attitude change can take place simply because you decide that you want to make yourself into a better person and you are determined to make that happen

Today Mrs. Obama is much more direct as she promotes her childhood-obesity initiative, Let’s Move. Speaking at a school in Alexandria, VA, in January, she said her family pediatrician “kind of waved the red flag for me, as a mother, and basically cautioned me that I had to take a look at my own children’s BMI.” (Credit Michelle Obama with making BMI, body mass index, a household term.) Like any parent, she said, Mrs. Obama thought her children were perfect and hadn’t noticed any unhealthy changes, let alone that they were in danger of becoming obese. “We always think that only happens to someone else’s kid,” she said.

THE DETAILS: Over time, the first lady has also talked about the changes she made to make her children healthier and, one assumes, thinner, though there are no before and after pictures available. She calls the changes minor and has said, “It’s not about being 100 percent perfect 100 percent of the time. Lord knows I’m not.”

While not completely eliminating cookies and ice cream or burgers and fries—part of the fun of childhood, as she’s called them—Mrs. Obama become more involved in her family’s eating habits and initiated changes that may seem small, but that added up to noticeable results.

Beyond diet and exercise, your thoughts, beliefs, and behavior are key in your quest to live longer.

The hard science of medicine gets all the credit for staving off disease and adding on years. But practices that strengthen your inner life — your mind, mood, and sense of connection — count, too, often as much as any solution that comes from a scalpel or prescription pad. “There’s good evidence that emotional, spiritual, and social factors are all important for longevity,” says Gary Small, M.D., director of the Center on Aging at UCLA. Research shows that these four strategies help the most.
Let The Sunshine In
• What we know: People who have a positive outlook when they’re young (measured by a personality test they took as college students) end up living longer, report two recent studies that followed participants for 30 and 40 years, respectively. Even at age 50, just feeling upbeat about getting older is linked, on average, to seven more years of life, research at Yale University has found. What’s the connection? “Negative emotions like hostility and bitterness are bad for overall health and specifically for the heart,” says Stephen Post, Ph.D., director of the Center for Medical Humanities, Compassionate Care, and Bioethics at Stony Brook University in New York. On the upside, women with sunny dispositions enjoy better heart health — over a 10- to 13-year follow-up, they had far less arterial narrowing than more dour women, a study from the University of Pittsburgh reported.
What you can do: Become an extrovert — join a community group, try a new activity, strike up a conversation with a stranger. Acting gregarious can make you feel more outgoing, which is linked to a more positive mood, researchers at Wake Forest University have found

After 10 years of buzz about a Viagra-like drug for women, nothing has been approved to date. Two companies are racing to change that. Both have active, advanced research programs working on prospective female libido drugs, one of which is available now to women who qualify to join a clinical trial.

Illinois-based BioSante Pharmaceuticals has launched several late-stage studies of a testosterone gel intended to remedy libido loss after menopause. About 100 U.S. medical institutions are now on board to test the drug’s safety and effectiveness among thousands of women; volunteers, some of whom will unknowingly receive a placebo, are still being recruited.

Earlier trials found the gel useful in women bothered by low desire following medically needed surgery to remove their ovaries. (Those sex organs produce roughly half a woman’s natural testosterone. Though often thought of as a “male hormone,” testosterone is tied to libido in both sexes.) A dollop a day of the gel on their arm boosted the frequency of satisfying sexual events compared with a placebo.

An approved medication for low female libido may be in higher demand than Viagra ever was for men, says Stephen Simes, president and CEO of the company. His rationale: 1.4 million off-label testosterone prescriptions were written for women in 2006 alone. He forecasts the drug will be available by 2011, as long as no snags arise. (Women interested in enrolling in the trial can E-mail the company’s investigators to see if they’re eligible.)

A nonhormonal treatment is also on the horizon, with late-stage testing well underway. Boehringer Ingelheim’s once-daily pill acts on serotonin receptors in the brain, which, after all, is the organ most heavily involved with sexual desire. Studies involve pre-menopausal women bothered by a low sex drive
